Application - Week 3
For this assignment, we are continuing to work on our GAME plan. I am still working on mine to make it right. So far, I have been reading from our text to find out as much as I can about how to use technology to its fullest potential in my classroom. Also, I have been looking at my standards to find the areas where I feel I can use technology to benefit the students. There are places that I think I can use it, but now, I have to decide which type of technology to use. I did get some good advice from one of my colleagues. It was suggested that I focus on one type of technology and become a master of it, then I can better teach it to my students. It would be better than trying to do them all at a mediocre level. The only problem I have with that is that there are so many really cool things I would like to do with my students that I don't know if I can pick just one! I would like to read some more about UDL and technology and how it ties into my curriculum. Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer (2009) tell how UDL lets students meet their learning goals in a flexible manner, instead of the teacher "dumbing down" the curriculum (p. 121). I want to find out more about this and tie it into my GAME plan. I like seeing and hearing the teachers from our DVD talking about what they do in their classrooms. It is very interesting and I pick up some very good ideas from them. As I find more information and possible ideas to try, I do want to try them and see what happens. Each class is different, so I can't dismiss it, if it doesn't work. I need to keep it and try it again at another time. I want to find some various technologies that will work for this year's class, so they will be prepared for their future.

Tami,
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of focusing on one type of technology. I would suggest that you become familiar with them and then use them with students later. In my situation, I like excel, but I need to use it more before I can teach it to students. So I might present information in an excel spreadsheet, or track student progress with excel. Once I am familiar with excel, then I might teach a math lesson that asks students to record data in a spreadsheet. Even though there are so many good types of technology we could use, what good are they if we use them inaccurately?
Tami,
ReplyDeleteI agree with Danielle about getting more proficient with technology before using it, but if you are comfortable with technology, you needn't limit yourself to one type.
I love a good Power Point and I have used it successfully to make a neat Jeopardy game. Another thing I like to do is use Power Point for my warmups so that the students can see them easily. I have taught my students about Power Point, but they have also taught me some things too.
Something else I use is a class website so my students can see assignments and the like from home, especially if they are ill or away from school.
You're right, there's so much to choose from, it's hard to choose!!!
Good luck!!
Danielle and Beth,
ReplyDeleteTrying to pick just one type of technology is the hard part. I would like to use a class website, but I think Power Point is the best way to go for my students. Like both of you pointed out, I need to really know one type before I teach my students, and then I can learn a new one. I know a little bit about so many that would be so much fun to do with the students, but I can't half teach them. It has been good talking to both of you. I get so much out of talking with the people from my class.
Tami and Danielle,
ReplyDeleteAs far as Excel is concerned, there are a lot of programs on youtube.com and booklets in libraries that can help you with step by step directions for different functions on Excel. I often put them on the projector screen as a review/reminder when working on Excel with students.
