For this weeks blog posting, we are supposed to think about the GAME plan we set up for ourselves and think about how we might help our students set up one for themselves. During this process, we have become more proficient in technology and skills required of us, so how can we help our students set up a plan that will help them become more proficient in the skills that are required of them. If you look at NETS for teachers and the NETS for students, you will see that the standards are very similar. I have already been through the process, so it would be easy to do it with my students.
I could give each student a copy of the standards for them and have them read through it. They would, then, follow the same procedure that we did for this class. I would have each student pick two standards that they want to work toward, set up an action plan, a way to monitor their progress, and a way to evaluate. Of course, their plans would look a little different than ours because they are students but they would still have the main ideas and concepts. I can discuss with them and help them decide on which standards are the ones they need to work on and why. If we can teach students how to use the GAME plan, then according to Cennamo, Ross & Ertmer (2009), we can prepare students for lifelong learning (pg. 4). I think this would work. I would appreciate any advice from my colleagues.

Hi Tami,
ReplyDeleteI think your plan on having your students create will work. The hardest part might be for you students to stay focused and classtime to have your students work on completing their goals.

ReplyDeleteI think this idea will work with your students. I think that if you meet with each one individually and guide them through picking the two standards that they need the most help with they will be able to work toward benefiting from these goals. I also think that if you can give them guidance and feedback along the way they will be able to gain the knowledge and skills needed to meet their goals.
Tami,
ReplyDeleteI think that it would be good and bad for the students to pick standards as their goals so you may want to tread lightly. It would be good because then they will know the standards better and be working to complete them. However it could be hard because they may bore the students or they may not be able to understand the language. I would suggest having one standard as a goal and then one goal they make up themselves. What do you think?

Scott,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your input. You brought up two very good points for me to think about. Staying focused is something my students have a hard time with on a normal basis, so this would take some extra effort on their part and mine. Finding time to let them work on their goals is another good point. I thought about this and I think I could remedy this by working our content so that they could work on their goals at the same time. I don't know if it would work, but I could try. What do you think about that idea? Do you have any other suggestions? I appreciate your support and advice.

JHarr,
ReplyDeleteI can see where you are coming from. I can think of several students right now who would say that they don't need help in any of these areas. They would think it is silly to make a GAME plan and not even try. I like your idea, but could I give them one and then have them pick one? I am not sure what exactly you mean by making one up, but I would rather have them choose one from the standards. I would go through them all and we would discuss them, so that everyone understood what they meant. How do you think this sounds? Do you think it would work now? I would really appreciate your input. Thanks so much for your support and advice.
Tami
Okay, I just messed up my replies. That last one goes to Luke and not JHarr. Sorry about that you two. It is Sunday and I am not quite with it.
ReplyDeleteNow for JHarr's,
ReplyDeleteI like that idea of meeting with each student and helping them to pick two goals. I could discuss them all with the entire class and then bring each one up and we could pick the two they wanted to work on. I think that just might work. Thanks so much for your support and advice. I really need all I can get and you three have helped me so much.
Tami - this sounds really workable, very much like something I would do. Thanks for corroborating what I was thinking in my head.
ReplyDeleteBest regards,
Beth
